Advisor’s Corner – March 2020 (Part II)

By now you have undoubtedly heard that Southern Region’s Area 2 Venturing Rendezvous event has been canceled in response Covid-19. While this is unfortunate, it is the responsible course of action and we fully support this decision.

I would like to thank the many individuals who came together to plan this event. Our youth leaders developed one of the most comprehensive themes I have ever seen for a scouting event (Thank you Colleen, Ariana, Arden, Faith, Anna and many others!). In addition, we had a large contingent of area, region, and national youth leaders joining us (thank you Amy for your leadership here). Thank you as well to the very solid group of adults who continue to support this event year after year with quality programming. I would also like to thank the professional staff – especially our Staff Advisor and Camp Rangers for their support of Venturing in general and this event specifically.

Thanks and appreciation go to our Scout Executive (Sam Thompson) and all of the volunteers and professionals who served as part of the Risk Management and Health and Safety committees.  We appreciate your dedication and willingness to work with us to try and find a path forward.

There is another group I would like to thank as well.  A special note of appreciation to the leaders that reached out this week and offered their kind words of support as we worked through the decision process.  Several of their emails began with “Boy, am I glad I don’t have to make this decision” and continued to acknowledge the challenges we were facing and offered support for whatever decision was reached.  These messages were highlights within a challenging week and speak volumes to the quality of our unit leaders.

The logistics of canceling an event are not trivial and present their own challenges. Please be patient as we work through the details.

What we do know is that anyone who registered for the event will get a full refund. We are working on the timing of that and will post it as the information becomes available.

Stay safe my friends.

PS – Stay tuned.  Our VOA officers are considering options for online training.  Ideally, we would prefer to do these in person – but where there is a will, Scouting will find a way.  If there are any trainings you’d like to see, please drop me a note at Circle Ten VOA at gmail dot com (remove the spaces) and let me know which trainings would appeal to your crew.
